Iodine Safety/Issues
There is no doubt that iodine is essential to the body just as water is. There are some on the internet promoting toxic levels of iodine, particularly the pharmaceutical drug Lugol's iodine. The RDA of iodine is 150 micrograms daily. Some sellers of iodine though are advocating 150 milligrams of iodine daily, which is 1,000 more than the RDA, and claiming the more the better. This is extremely dangerous advice. The levels recommended by these iodine promoters are considered toxic leading to various complications from tissue corrosion to hyperthyroidism followed by negative feedback hypothyroidism. When adverse effects are reported on these sites they are blatantly dismissed claiming that the person is simply going through a bromine detox or other such nonsense. And in one case I saw the person reported that when they started the iodine their heart rate went up and they started having trouble breathing. When asked if this was from the iodine the iodine promoter claimed it was not. The fact is that these are known side effects of iodine alone, and are also symptoms of an iodine allergy. I have actually seen numerous people post the adverse effects they had after taking iodine, which again get passed off by the iodine supporters as something else. I encourage people to research the adverse effects of iodine as well as the various iodine sources before deciding to supplement iodine since iodine can be highly toxic. Especially at the extreme doses being recommended by some. Even water, which is generally considered safe and necessary, can kill you if you ingest 1,000 times more than the recommended amount.
