I was just reading a post about a person who was taking 50 mg of Iodoral iodine every day for the past 2 years. As a result they are experiencing osteopenia (mineral loss from the bones), muscle aches, bone aches, muscle twitches, headaches and brain fog.
What is the connection?
Toxic amounts of iodine such as the amount the poster was taking forces the thyroid in to a state of hyperthyroidism. One one of the side effects of hyperthyroidism is bone loss. Same reason that thyroid medications such as Synthroid and Levoxyl are well known for causing bone loss. These drugs cannot really regulate the thyroid. And the surges in thyroid hormone from the drugs create states of hyperthyroidism leading to the breakdown of the bones.
The rise in serum calcium leads to side effects including muscle aches, bone aches, muscle spasms/twitches, headaches and "brain fog".

Another case of iodine toxicity
I just read another post where excess iodine led to hyperthyroidism. The poster stats that he had a variety of health issues and decided to try the iodine after reading Dr. Brownstein's book. The poster started taking 12-24mg of Lugol's iodine 5% or Iodoral 12.5% part of the time and the rest of the time 1-3mg of seaweed. That amount of seaweed would not cause any problems. But both Lugol's and the Iodoral contain potassium iodide and the more toxic elemental iodine. The poster reported feeling better initially, but gradually deteriorated over the year developing fatigue and a swollen throat. New lab tests showed that the poster ha developed hyperthyroidism, which can happen with taking excess iodine. The body will try to compensate for this by shutting down the thyroid, which also helps to protect the thyroid from the toxic levels of iodine. This can lead to a rebound hypothyroidism, especially if the level of iodine is suddenly reduced. I know someone personally going through this exact thing right now. Of course one of the people selling iodine supplements tried to make it sound like the iodine had nothing to do with it as usual. In reference to the posters statement that the iodine load test showed a sufficient level the iodine seller states: "i cant imagine you being sufficient. you never took enough to overcome halogen imbalance, let alone become sufficient"Again, this is a great example of why people need to do their homework, and not get their health information solely from sales sites. The dosage the poster was taking was well above what is considered a safe level for iodine. If the iodine were only potassium iodide then they likely would not have poisoned themselves with those doses since potassium iodide is much safer than elemental iodine. The Lugol's iodine and Iodoral though both contain the more toxic elemental iodine as well, which can build up quickly at high doses causing toxicity. As far as the "halogen imbalance" claim goes this is extremely misleading! First of all the iodine promoter has no idea what halogens the poster is being exposed to and in what levels. Secondly, not all halogens are bad. For example, we cannot exist without the halogen chlorine in the form of chloride. And small amounts of natural fluoride, another halogen, help to maintain the health of bones by stimulating bone building osteoblasts. This can help explain why excess iodine can lead to bone loss. Often the iodine promoters will try to blame the side effects of iodine on a "bromine detox". Again this is so misleading. We are exposed to much higher levels of the halogens fluorine and bromine than we are bromine and iodine. And fluorine and chlorine are both more reactive than bromine readily displacing it. Therefore, how can bromine build up in the body when we are exposed to much higher levels of the more reactive fluorine and chlorine that will continually push out less reactive halogens like bromine? And why does our daily exposure to these more reactive halogens not cause the "bromine detox" the iodine supporters are always blaming on the side effects of iodine? Simple, it is the iodine causing these side effects, not bromine. The most disturbing part is despite the poster developing a dangerous condition from the excess iodine the iodine supporter is encouraging the poster to take even more iodine stating: "now that you have had a taste of iodine, how about actually supplementing it?"Hopefully a lot of people will read these examples and think twice abort where they get their medical advice from. If you know anyone supplementing with iodine please forward links to these posts and the iodine safety issues posted on the Thyroid Health/Disorders forum to them so they will use the iodine responsibly rather than poisoning themselves with the toxic levels being recommended by some individuals.

Here is one of the responses to the poster who developed hyperthyroidism from taking too much iodine:
"A number of people who formerly described themselves as "going hyper" -- I'm one of them -- subsequently found out that their jumpiness, hot and cold flashes, heart pounding was NOT hyperthyroidism. It was bromide detox."
This is the kind of dangerous misinformation that gets people hurt. These symptoms have NOTHING to do with a bromine detox, it is iodine poisoning. Take for instance the pounding heart. If the iodine supporters knew anything at all about bromine then they would know that bromine is well known for being a strong sedative. Thus it would slow and soften the heartbeat, not make it race and pound as has been described and occurs from HYPERTHYROIDISM!!!
Next they state:
"I held onto the notion for months that I could only take a little Iodoral. When I tried the salt loading protocol, suddenly I could take way more iodine."
So why was this person able to take more iodine after salt flushing? Simple, salt flushing pushes out the iodine reducing the toxic levels. The salt, sodium chloride, contains the more reactive chloride halogen that readily displaces iodine. This is why they keep telling people who develop iodine poisoning to do salt flushes even though they claim the iodine is not causing their problems. They are lying to people about not having iodine toxicity, but at the same time they are telling people to do the salt flushes, which in actuality is removing the toxic excess of iodine. This is akin to telling people that after they eat they should vomit to get rid of the food so they can eat more food. Sheer stupidity!!! You do not tell someone to poison themselves with an excess of iodine just to push out the excess iodine with a salt flush so they take toxic levels of iodine again!
And finally they claim:
"Also, Iodine is used to TREAT hyperthyroidism."
Yes, an excess of iodine has been used to treat hyperthyroidism. Why? Because the thyroid shuts down to protect itself from the toxic high levels of iodine. This is also one of the reasons that the excess levels of iodine being recommended (100-150+mg) causes hypothyroidism with continued use. The excess of iodine will cause the thyroid to shut down to protect itself and the body.
Again this is what happened to my friend recently when the doctor put him on an iodine rich medication. We got the doctor to cut his medication in half and he is supporting his thyroid with the Thyroid Tonic. And he is improving. Today he was able to stand up without assistance for the first time in a while. But he still has a way to go because the excess iodine screwed him up so bad and it takes a long time to get the iodine back out of his system.
I cannot emphasize it enough. Be aware of where you are getting your health advice! People can really mess themselves up bad following such bad advice, especially if they fall for the they need more iodine to get the bromide out line when there is no bromine toxicity to begin with.
